Welcome to CETC

Fareham College’s Civil Engineering Training Centre (CETC) was established in 2017 in response to a country-wide skills shortage believed to be hindering civil engineering growth and expansion in the south of England. To tackle the problem head-on, a group of local civil engineering employers set up the Solent Civil Engineering Employer Group (SCEEG) in conjunction with Fareham College to create a unique Apprenticeship training programme that would address these issues, support the construction industry across the region and create more jobs and opportunities for skilled groundworkers.

The result of this collaboration was the design and development of Fareham College’s CETC campus, a purpose-built two-acre mock construction site close to the College’s existing CEMAST campus on the Daedalus airfield, dedicated to the delivery of a specialist Civil Engineering & Groundworks Apprenticeship.

Since it opened, CETC has seen unprecedented levels of success, and was judged ‘Apprentice Initiative of the Year’ at the Prestigious Construction Excellence SECBE awards and ‘Construction Apprenticeship Provider of the Year’ at the FE Week and AELP ACC Apprenticeship Awards.

An award-winning training facility

CETC is a busy and energetic campus, with constant activity taking place as apprentices learn the essentials of the trade. Trainees can be found laying foundations, mixing and pouring concrete, laying drainage, installing edgings, kerbs, paving slabs and block paving, perfecting concrete finishes, practicing brickwork techniques and installing steel fixings, using surveying and levelling equipment, as well as driving forward-tipping dumpers and ride-on rollers.

There are also classrooms, where relevant theory to support practical training is taught, and a breakout room where apprentices can spend time during breaks and lunch.

Facilities at CETC

CETC is designed to provide a fully operational, realistic groundworks and civil engineering training environment and is fully equipped with the machinery, tools, materials and resources needed to ensure all apprentices develop work-ready skills and complete the relevant licences needed to work successfully on-site.

Employers frequently visit the site to support training, mentor apprentices and maintain the strong industry connections that the training scheme is renowned for. On-site equipment used daily by students includes:

360 degree excavators
Loading shovels
Levelling equipment
180 degree backhoe loaders

CETC: a new campus for the future

Due to the success and interest generated throughout the Initiative’s inaugural year of operation, the College submitted various applications for funding and in 2018, less than a year after its inception, was successful in securing the go-ahead to build a new, state-of-the-art Training Centre that will satisfy the industry’s ongoing demand for education of this kind. The new campus was awarded £2.8 million of Local Growth Funding from the Solent LEP and opened in October 2019. The new Training Centre provides:

A 1,008m2 state-of-the-art facility, comprising two floors of spacious indoor teaching space, classrooms, IT suites, space for self-directed learning and changing facilities
5,000m2 of live outdoor construction-site training space
Capacity for up to 20 specialist teaching staff and professional coaches
A 3,600m2 CPCS Test Centre for Ride-on Roller and Forward-Tipping Dumper training.

Getting to the CETC campus

The CETC campus is located on the Daedalus Airfield on the B3385 to Lee-on-the-Solent, adjacent to our CEMAST campus.
