Fareham College win county Army Challenge

 

A team of 10 Uniformed Services students have beaten eight other schools and colleges at the Hampshire and Surrey Army Challenge.

The Challenge pitches 9 College against each other including the Military Prep College and Highbury College at Thorney Island. They have to complete a series of physical events such as indoor rowing, march and shoot, a mile and a half run and two assault courses.

This victory was in addition to Fareham College’s win in the Adjutant Generals Cup, again against local Colleges.

Extended Project available to help students get into Russell Group universities

 

The University of Southampton is working closely with students who are enrolled on the Extended Project.

A-level students recently went to the University of Southampton and the message from the University was that they strongly support the Extended Project. The skills gained on this course include research, essay writing. presentation and project management skills. 

Beauty student secures job with top beauty company

 

BTEC Level 3 Beauty student, Amy Birch, is the first of the Level 3 students to secure employment with Steiner this year.

She will begin work with at the company, which is used by cruise liners to supply beauty staff, when her course ends this summer.

The former Wildern School student applied for the job because it seemed like a good time to travel the world as her parents are about to move abroad.

Courage and Determination was the theme for New Creatives, one of the outstanding projects granted the London 2012 Inspire mark.

 This is the badge of the London 2012 Inspire programme, which recognises exceptional and innovative projects inspired by the 2012 Games. The 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games have several core values and the New Creatives team picked 'courage and determination' to be their theme for the exhibition, which is currently displayed in the Aspex gallery in Gunwharf Quays.

Hair and Beauty Showcase 2012

 

Fareham College’s annual Hair and Showcase will once again be wowing audiences.

The event, which will be at Ferneham Hall on 1 May, is a showcase of students’ work from all of the courses that come under Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy.

In order to be selected, students had to go through Showcase Heats at the College, where they had to work to a time in order to produce a look to a certain theme. Those who were successful will then be judged by a panel of experts to decide the winner from each category at the Showcase event on Tuesday.

Former student sheds his hair for Macmillan

 

Kind-hearted Matthew Meredith wanted to support Macmillan, the cancer charity, by having a sponsored head shave and leg wax.

He chose the charity because three years ago, someone he knew died of cancer and he saw them through to their final moments. Matthew said: ‘I wanted to raise money for a group that supports people that go through cancer and their carer’s.

‘I used to study Indian Head Massage at Fareham College and I knew the facilities, staff and students were exceptional and that’s why I asked if someone at the College would do it.’

Fareham students make-up school students for Rock Challenge

 

Fareham College’s Hair and Media Make-up students supported Neville Lovett Community School for Rock Challenge.

Our students went to Portsmouth Guildhall to complete the hair and make-up for 40 Neville Lovett pupils in an amazing 2 ½ hours.

The theme they had to work to was a Barbie training camp; each group had a slightly different theme but were all dolls. Group one were ballet dolls, group two were air stewardesses and group three were cheerleaders. 

Students learn about newspaper production

 

Three IT students and two Photography students visited The News Centre in Portsmouth where they spent the morning creating front pages of the newspaper using the actual stories and photographs from that day. 

They were able to name the paper with one of their choices and create adverts to add to their front page. The students were also able to experience the same software the journalists use, giving them a real insight into how a newspaper is developed daily.

Colleges go head to head in debating challenge

 

Students from Fareham College and St Vincent College participated in a debating challenge organised by the Friends of the Earth Gosport and Fareham.

The event pitched four-a-side teams from each college against each other to debate two motions. Although, the subject of each motion was known a couple of weeks in advance, giving time for the participants to research, they only found out two minutes before the start whether they would be arguing for or against the motion.

Uniform Services students clean War Graves

A group of students on the Uniformed Services Course at Fareham College have volunteered to carry out work in the community for the Commonwealth  War Graves Commission.
