Fareham College are pleased to offer an intensive one year Health Care and a one year Sport Science Access Course. These programmes provide you with the opportunity to learn all about the health care and sport sectors, with an aim to prepare you for Higher Education, helping you to qualify for health or sport related courses at university.

You do not need any formal A Level or Level 3 qualifications as this nationally recognised Access Course teaches you the skills and knowledge necessary to begin studying for a degree.

All applicants are required to possess a minimum grade of C in GCSE in Maths, English and Science.

Available Courses

Access to Health Sciences (Daytime)

  • ACCD3-156-P1 | Starts:08/09/2015 | Ends:14/07/2016 | Day of Week:Tues & Thurs | Time:10:30-14:00
  • REQUIREMENTS – All Applicants will be required to complete an interview and written assignment. All applicants will be asked to provide original certificates of GCSE qualifications in Maths and English.
  • DETAILS – This intensive one year course provides you with the opportunity to learn about the health care sector; students from this programme have progressed to courses such as Nursing, Midwifery, Social Work, Radiography and other related subjects.
  • CONTENT – The course comprises mandatory units in Study Skills, Maths and ICT as well as specialist units in Biology, Psychology, Sociology and Chemistry. You will also be expected to undertake regular work experience as part of the programme which will enhance your suitability for university study.
  • ASSESSMENT – You will be assessed by a variety of methods, including essays and reports, presentations and practical assessments. There will also be the opportunity to undertake a 3000 word research project.
  • PROGRESSION – This course is structured in such a way as to enable students to apply for university courses in the field of healthcare; it is ideal for those who are returning to study with an aim to work in Nursing, Midwifery, Social Work and allied fields.
  • CONSIDERATIONS – Most university courses will expect you to have GCSE English and Maths at C grade or above and some also require GCSE Science. It will also be possible for some students to gain their work experience at the college in the NHS Leg Care Centre.

Access to Sport Science

  • ACSS3-156-P1 | Starts:Various dates available.
  • REQUIREMENTS –
  • DETAILS – The course is designed to prepare students for a level of academic study that will enable them to enter university. Ideal for students who may have been out of education for some time. It is an applied academic course with core elements underpinning Social-Cultural, Physiological, Psychological and Sports Injury aspects. This enables students to apply for a wide range of University Courses.
  • CONTENT – You will study 11 units: Introduction to Sports Psychology, Psychology of exercise & health, Introduction to contemporary issues, Exercise Physiology, Using Academic literature, Psychology of human movement, Introduction to socio-cultural aspects of sport, Introduction to functional anatomy, Concepts and components of Health & Fitness, Sports Injuries as well as an Independent Project.
  • ASSESSMENT – A range of assessment methods are used and full tutorial support is provided to develop the new and returning learner’s confidence in studying. During the last part of the programme students conduct a research project on an area of their choice. Assessments are varied throughout the year.
