“The colleges that provide Higher Education work very hard to ensure they are providing a quality service to their students and the local community and it is gratifying to see that students themselves say they are pleased with the education they receive.
Colleges specialise in providing technical and professional alternatives to the three year residential degree. They enable students to study closer to home with lower tuition fees, often with smaller class sizes enabling more individual tuition.”

HE Levels Explained
To help you choose what is right for you, below is a breakdown of the course levels and corresponding qualifications available at Fareham College:
Professional Diplomas enable you to develop existing professional skills at a higher level in order to secure on-going career enhancement. Some courses require membership of an institute or awarding body.
Foundation Degrees are degree-level qualifications which combine academic study with work-place learning. They are designed in conjunction with employers to ensure you are equipped with the relevant practical skills and knowledge alongside theoretical understanding. There is the option to progress to a BA (L6) Top-Up on completion.
Higher National Diploma (HND) courses focus on advanced practical learning and theoretical knowledge and equip you with the necessary higher level skills to start or develop your chosen career, or facilitate competence in managing and training others. Mainly assessed through assignments and practical tasks, they offer an alternative to degree-level study, are competitively priced and highly-valued by employers. On successful completion, you may have the option to progress on to the final year of study at a university.
Higher National Certificates (HNC) are one or two year vocational programmes for those working in vocational or technical jobs and for those who train or develop others. These enable progression to study at Higher National Diploma (L5) level.
National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ) are linked to jobs or careers. They can help you gain experience and knowledge about a particular job role or industry.
Access courses are designed for those wishing to enter degree level study, but who lack the relevant qualifications and work/voluntary experience. Our Access courses are available in either Health Sciences or Sport Science and will enable you to develop the knowledge and skills needed to progress to university-level study.

“The College is very friendly and has good links with partner universities so you are able to use their facilities and are visited by guest lecturers. I have had the opportunity to apply the different approaches we learnt about in class and covered in our essays directly to the workplace. Working with others from a range of backgrounds has been very interesting and has helped when reflecting on my own practice and setting. Now I have completed the course, I have been promoted to the role of Deputy Manager of a nursery in Winchester, which I am thoroughly enjoying.”
