One year – Full time
Five GCSEs at grade 9-3 including English and Maths, or a full Level 1 qualification with a ‘stepping stone’ English and Maths qualification.
This exciting and stimulating course is aimed at students seeking a career in health or social care with an introduction to key areas relating to current practice in the area. During the year, you will have the opportunity to attend two different weekly work placements from a range of day care centres, local primary schools, nurseries, residential care homes or the Gosport War Memorial Hospital. These placements will enable you to observe professional practice in action and gain valuable employability skills.
This qualification uses a range of assessment methods including coursework and a portfolio of evidence. You will gain an understanding of the Health and Social Care sector through the completion of a wide range of units covering areas such as equality and diversity, human growth and development, communication and dementia awareness.
Educational visits take place throughout the year including trips to Southampton General Hospital LifeLab, Food Basics Bank and Lockswood Day Care Centre. During the year, sessions will be held with various guest speakers including a funeral director, dementia carer and an area fund raiser from Naomi House.
High standards of attire are a strict requirement during your course and will include a set College uniform. Text books relating to your course will be available and these are essential for your learning.
You can progress on to a Level 3 Health Studies or Level 3 Childcare courses. To progress, a GCSE at grade 4 or above in English and Maths is essential. Alternatively, you could become an apprentice or start your working career.
