Course Details

Entry Requirements

Applicants must be 19 years old or over.

This course provides learners with an introduction to basic counselling. This course is aimed at anyone wishing to explore a personal interest in counselling and self-awareness and also at employers and voluntary organisations to support staff who undertake such roles.

This qualification comprises two mandatory units:

Unit 1 – introduction to counselling provides a basic introduction to counselling and the use of counselling skills. The aim of this unit is to provide learners with a basic knowledge of the counseling profession and an understanding of and ability to use basic counselling skills in a practical setting.

Unit 2 – first steps in counselling theory provides a basic introduction to the roots of counselling theory. The aim of this unit is to show how theory underpins some of the skills identified and practised in Unit 1. It also provides a basic understanding of the three main areas of counselling theory, and how learners can begin to relate to counselling practice

Personal journals, written work and an end of course online multiple choice exam.

Learners may progress on to the Level 3 certificate in counselling to enhance their knowledge of counselling skills and theory (subject to satisfactory interview).

For those wishing to work towards a professional qualification enabling them to work as a counselling practitioner, learners may then progress onto the Level 4 diploma in counselling practice (subject to numbers).

Due to the nature of the course, family members cannot enrol together. We encourage and welcome applicants from all walks of life with a variety of experiences.

This course involves learning about sensitive issues, so if you are currently experiencing personal problems it is advised that you delay joining this course until a later date.

Although it isn’t necessary to have formal qualifications to apply for this course there will be a requirement for students to complete written work, to access and research topics via books and the internet, and to sit a final multiple choice exam.
