Entry Requirements

Five GCSEs at grade 9-3 including English and Maths, or a full Level 1 qualification with a ‘stepping stone’ English and Maths qualification. Experience in a school/college setting is desirable. You will need to work well as part of a team and also independently. You will have a passion for supporting children and young people with their education. You will also need to be a good listener, have the ability to reflect on your own practice and be willing to participate in class presentations.


This course is designed to support your development, knowledge, understanding and skills when supporting the learning of children and young people. It comprises 11 mandatory units which cover a wide range of areas including children and young people’s development, supporting children and young people’s positive behaviour and communication and professional relationships. You will be expected to complete a work placement in a school or college setting where you will gather evidence to show you are able to complete a variety of activities required for this career pathway. All units for this qualification will be internally assessed using a portfolio of evidence, assignment tasks, observations as well as some controlled assessments.

High standards of attire are a strict requirement during your course and will include a set college uniform. Text books relating to your course will be available and these are essential for your learning.

As learners need to show competence in both skills and knowledge, they will either need to be working or be on a practical placement, during the taught programme of study, in a learning environment (school or college) and therefore will also require a clear Disclosure and Barring Service check (DBS).
