Access to HE courses are a well-established set of qualifications designed for people who do not have the qualifications to enter a university level course but who do have life experience and a willingness to learn. Access to HE is an intensive course offered over a single year on a part-time basis as an alternative way to university for people who have not had the opportunity to achieve the entry requirements necessary during their earlier education. Many students who complete an Access to HE course progress on to local universities completing courses that lead to nursing, midwifery, social work, education and radiography.

The course comprises a number of mandatory units which include study skills, maths and IT as well as a number of specialist units. The specialist units relate to the final title of the Access to HE Diploma and might include subjects such as biology, psychology, sociology, education, sport and chemistry.

Specific Online Pathways Available are:

  • Access to HE Health Professionals
  • Access to HE Science
  • Access to HE Business & Management

The workload on the Access to HE course is high and it is essential learners are fully prepared for this intense way to study. During the course you will be supported to apply to universities using the UCAS application process. This happens at the end of your first term.

Universities will process your application and if they offer you a place this will be based upon successful completion of your Access to HE course. It is increasingly common for universities to require specific grade requirements for units studied on the course.

You will learn and be assessed using an online platform called Pearl. This platform provides you with all the teaching materials to study at your own pace in time slots that suit your lifestyle.Throughout the course you submit assessments onto the platform which are then marked by your tutor.

There are also a number of set group tutorials throughout the year for you to meet others that may be studying and to gain some face to face support from your tutor.
