Entry Requirements

You must be at least 16 years old to embark on this course and have English and mathematics Functional Skills Level 2/GCSE at C grade or above. There is also a requirement to be employed within an early years setting across the full age range of 0-five for a minimum of 12 hours per week. If you currently work in a setting that does not cover all this age range you will be required to attend another setting for a period of time.

This qualification prepares you to become an Early Years Educator, it is recognised on the DfE list of approved list for Early Years Educators and once completed will allow you to be included in the ratios of staff to children at level 3, enabling you to work in nurseries and preschools with children aged 0-five years.

In order to aid holistic delivery and assessment you will study a range of units based on the following four themes:

  • Theme 1: health and well-being
  • Theme 2: legislation, frameworks and professional practice
  • Theme 3: play, development and learning for school readiness
  • Theme 4: professional development


Assessment is holistic and involves assessing your competence within the work environment, written assessments and a longitudinal study. You will require visits to your workplace to assess your practice.


You need to gain the Paediatric First aid qualification within 3 months of starting work as a level 3 Early Years Educator. This career plays an essential role in ensuring young children learn and develop well and are kept healthy. Upon achievement of this qualification, it is intended that you will be able to enter the workforce as an early years educator or access higher education to complete a foundation degree.


You may be required to spend some time in another setting to gain experience if your setting does not cover the full age range of 0-five years old. You should also have a clear DBS and will need to gain Paediatric First aid qualification within 3 months of starting work as a level 3 Early Years Educator.
