Entry Requirements

Five GCSEs at grade 9-4 including English and Maths, or a full Level 2 qualification with a merit profile and grades 9-4 in GCSE English and Maths.


This course provides you with the opportunity to study various aspects of the diverse and ever-changing industry of sport and physical activity.

There is an emphasis on learners initially gaining a sound understanding of core subjects within the programme, and then to focus your studies on particular areas of specialism for careers such as fitness instructing, sports coaching or sports therapy in your second year.

The course is a stimulating combination of practical and theoretical work.

During your course, you will study a number of specific units including:

  • Principles of anatomy and physiology
  • Planning a career in sport and physical activity
  • Exercise, Health & Lifestyle
  • Fitness testing for sport & exercise
  • Fitness training and programming
  • Sports nutrition
  • Psychology for sports performance
  • Practical team & individual sports

  • Work Experience in Sport

Second Year units will depend on your preferred career pathway.

Sports science largely offers expert scientific backup for top training and performance ensuring that athletes perform at their optimal level during competition and training. On this pathway, you will study various aspects of sport science combining both practical and theoretical work.

Course content includes:

  • Applied Sports Psychology
  • Applied Exercise Physiology
  • Sports Massage
  • Research Project

The Sport Coaching pathway is a stimulating combination of practical and theoretical work. You will study a number of specific units including:

  • Sports Coaching
  • Leadership in Sport
  • Analysis of Sports Performance
  • Technical & Tactical Skills in Sport

Students may undertake additional coaching awards and will also be encouraged to take part in a range of voluntary activities.

Learners will also undertake optional study units and additional professional qualifications (dependant on career aspirations) as well as industry related work experience.

You will also be encouraged to take part in a range of volunteering opportunities and enrichment activities.

Additional Professional Qualifications

As part of your course you will achieve additional professional qualifications to certify your skills, training and development. Successful completion of this course will reward you with the following qualifications as part of your study:

  • L2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing (Gym-based exercise)
  • L2 Certificate in Multi-Skills development (sports coaching)
  • Certificate in Sports Leadership
  • Emergency First Aid at Work
  • Safeguarding Certificate

Football Academy

As part of the academy programme, you will receive three hours of football coaching per week. All coaching will be facilitated by qualified staff. You will also compete against other colleges and academies on Wednesday afternoons during your programme.

The football academy will be delivered in conjunction with AFC Portchester. All training and home fixtures will take place at AFC Portchester.

Next Steps

You could progress on to university to study for a degree, apply for a Higher Apprenticeship scheme, or enter directly into a career in physiotherapy, sports massage, sports development, leisure centre management, teaching or coaching. You could also aim for a Sport Scholarship to continue your studies in the USA.
