Entry Requirements

Students wishing to enrol in this course should have some formal experience with makeup application. This may be in a professional setting or having achieved a qualification in a relevant subject such as Hair and Beauty. However, we look at each applicant on their individual merits and can arrange a skills test for brand new students who can also demonstrate creativity and mature interpersonal skills.

Content

Start your career as a Makeup Artist with this comprehensive part time course. Over the period of 23 weeks you will gain all the skills, knowledge and qualifications needed to become a professional makeup artist working in fashion, film, theatre, salons, photography studios and TV. These are exciting, fast-paced environments to work in where you may find yourself alongside models, performers and celebrities – all depending on you to look their best! The course will cover advanced techniques of how to design and apply make up for a range of purposes, and also look in detail at health and safety and client communication

Unlike other courses in the local area we include a dedicated unit on the use of airbrush equipment and techniques, which are essential for work in the TV and Film industry. Airbrush makeup provides flawless coverage, lasts up to 15 hours and is even water resistant – a fantastic service to be able to offer future on-screen clients and blushing brides.

This course also provides the perfect stepping stone to university, where you can progress on to BA (Hons) in Make-up and Hair Design.

For professionals already in the industry, the Level 3 Make-up Artistry course provides the accredited qualifications and certificates you will need to become properly insured to provide a variety of different hair and beauty services.

This course will cover the following units:

  • Health and safety in the salon environment
  • Client care and communication
  • Promote products and services to clients in a salon
  • Design and application of face and body art
  • Airbrush make-up techniques for film and TV
  • Make-up for fashion and photography
  • Media make-up for theatre and performance
  • Camouflage make-up

Throughout the course you will be able to photograph and record your creations to build a personal portfolio of your work. Students who can demonstrate professionalism and exceptional skills may also have the opportunity for paid work experience. Previous students have enjoyed placements at events and studios in London and across the UK.

This course is open to students of all ages, and taught by industry professionals with years of experience including catwalk shows, fashion shoots, festivals, celeb parties and high end clients all over the UK and abroad. We have excellent studio and salon facilities and our small classes mean you will receive plenty of 1-to-1 teaching time and tutoring.

Assessment

The course will be assessed through the use of written tasks, practical tasks and oral questioning. Practical assessments will be completed at Fareham College training salon. An element of home study will be expected to support the completion of written tasks.

Progression

This qualification will prepare you for the role of a specialist make-up artist in the beauty, media or arts sector. On successful completion of this qualification, you could progress directly into employment in a variety of contexts, which include:

  • Theatre, film, print media, photographic studios
  • Beauty or hair salons
  • Independent / self-employed / mobile / home-based settings
  • Product distribution and training

This course also fulfils the entry criteria for progressing on to study at university in a suitable subject.

Considerations

There is no formal uniform for this course although comfortable and presentable black clothes are expected to be worn throughout your training. A make-up kit will also need to be purchased containing products and equipment to support the completion of the programme. More details to be provided at enrolment and a student bursary may be available for learners who are eligible.
