Entry Requirements

To enter this programme you should ideally be employed in a technical role and have a Higher National Certificate in an engineering related subject. In addition, you will be expected to demonstrate the enthusiasm and motivation needed to meet the academic requirements of the programme.

Content

The HND is a well-established national qualification set at an intermediate undergraduate level and places academic theory within a practical context.

You will be taught within our state-of-the-art CEMAST Centre and have access to facilities such as; a design suite, CAD/CAM, 3D Printing and Dyno testing facilities in our automotive workshop. This is an opportunity to really develop your practical skills alongside the analytical skills and knowledge required for Higher Education.

CEMAST has been developed alongside employers, and there will be the opportunity to work on projects with industry representatives or with your own employer to ensure that the skills you develop make you the most employable. You will be taught through practical demonstrations, workshop demonstrations, presentations, and lectures. There will also be an option to work on our race car both at CEMAST and also at race meetings entered during the year.

The course is primarily for people who are currently working in a related field who wish to gain a qualification in recognition of their skills and knowledge or who would like to build on existing expertise. It is anticipated that a portion of the course will be linked to work-based learning or to workplace simulations.

This course is ideal for people wanting to progress into Engineering Project management or gain professional recognition by progressing to Incorporated Engineer Status. You must have the ability to self-motivate and a willingness to learn new skills and techniques.

You must achieve a minimum of 120 credits (which add to your 120 credits gained at level 4 HNC) to achieve this qualification.

The credits are achieved through the completion of units which may include:

Advanced mathematics for engineering

  • E&E measurement and testing
  • Strength of materials
  • Computer-aided machining
  • Heat transfer and combustion
  • Engineering thermodynamics
  • Manufacturing process
  • Materials engineering

Pathways include:

  • HND in Aerospace Engineering
  • HND in Electrical/Electronic Engineering
  • HND in Mechanical Engineering

Assessment

Assessment will be through assignments, practical assessment and some examinations. Each outcome or module will be assessed by a project-style
assignment.

Progression

Students can progress on to study a Degree in Engineering within their chosen discipline or a related subject. Alternatively, you could gain a Degree Apprenticeship where on and off the job training will prepare you to take on more responsibility.

Considerations

You will require the following: pens, pencils, ruler, protractor, compass, eraser, line paper, scientific calculator, a ring binder and a memory stick or portable hard drive.
