Entry Requirements

240 credits (120 at Level 4 and 120 credits at Level 5) in a related subject such as Early Childhood or Teaching and Learning Support. Alternatively, a relevant Foundation Degree in Early Childhood or a relevant Foundation Degree in Teaching and Learning – or the International equivalent of 240 credits (120 credits at Level 4 and 120 credits at Level 5).

Content

The Top-up BA (Hons) Early Childhood programme explores the subject of children, childhood and families from both a national and global context and range of perspectives, such as philosophical, historical, psychological, sociological, cultural, educational, health, welfare, legal, political and economic. Significant government policy and provision will be critically examined in relation to each module.

The units of study will include:

  • Early education in an adventurous environment
  • Leading and managing professional practice
  • Independent project
  • Special needs and disability
  • Children’s literature and the media

Assessment

This course is delivered through presentations, portfolio, reports, exams and essays.

Progression

After successful completion of the Level 6 Top-up for BA (Hons) Early Childhood you may wish to continue your professional and academic development. Routes available include Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS) or a Masters in Early Years Professional Practice. Should you wish to consider EYTS you must have GCSE (grade 5 or above) or equivalent in Maths, English and Science to undertake this route.

Considerations

You must be prepared to carry out self-study activities and occasionally travel to the University of Chichester.

What you can expect from us

All of your teaching and assessments are included in your tuition fees, including, lectures/guest lectures, tutorials, seminars, and teaching facilities. You will also have access to some support and services:

  • A range of student services – advisors and careers service;
  • The LRC services are free for students and there are some e-resources available. You may become liable for fines if you don’t return items on time.
  • Open access IT spaces, wi-fi across the campuses
  • Access to support from our Careers Service

 

Costs

  • Some core textbooks may be required although many are able to be borrowed from the LRC
  • General stationery and other supplies such as presentation materials
  • Photocopying and printing (note: a hard copy of each assessment to be submitted is required)
  • The library is charged for the Inter Library Loans service – we pass this cost on directly to our customers
  • Travel to, from and between Fareham and Chichester University
  • Gym membership
  • Educational Visits,  Students may be required to pay towards the cost
  • If you require a Diagnostic Assessment for a Specific Learning Difficulty such as Dyslexia, the college may be able to assist you in arranging this. You will be required to pay for this assessment.
  • Graduation: It is free for the student to attend the ceremony itself. Graduands must wear academic dress. Academic dress, guest tickets and photography are additional costs payable by the student.

Courses that work with vulnerable people may require a DBS enhanced disclosure check. Often your employer will organise this for you but if you are completing a placement this will cost about £44.
