Higher Education Levels Explained

Level 3 Access

Access to Higher Education is a level 3 qualification designed to support learners to achieve the necessary entry requirements to study for an undergraduate qualification. Aimed at students who would like to complete a degree but currently do not have the necessary pre-requisites, we offer Access programmes with a Health or Science pathway in person or online.

Level 4 – Higher National Certificates (HNC)

HNCs are one or two-year study programmes designed to support students to develop and expand existing skills from a Level 3 (A Level, T Level, BTEC or Access qualification). Students can progress onto a Higher National Diploma (Level 5) qualification. Level 4 qualifications also form part of a Foundation Degree, which consists of two years of study (Level 4 being the first year and Level 5 being the second). Foundation Degrees (FdSc) carry the same weight as two-thirds of a Bachelor’s degree.

Level 5 – Higher National Diploma (HND)

HNDs are one or two-year study programmes that focus on advancing practical and theoretical knowledge. These are the equivalent of the second year of a Bachelor’s degree. Level 5 qualifications also form part of a Foundation Degree, which consists of two years of study (Level 4 being the first year and Level 5 being the second). Foundation Degrees (FdSc) carry the same weight as two-thirds of a Bachelor’s degree.

Level 6 – Bachelor’s Degree

The Level 6 Honours degree is the most common and widely studied undergraduate qualification. Achieving a BA(Hons), BSc(Hons), Bed, LLB or BEng qualification typically takes three to four years. It is also possible to complete a Foundation Degree and ‘top-up’ to achieve a full undergraduate qualification.

NVQs and HTQs

National Vocation Qualifications (NVQ) and Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQ) are alternative forms of higher education study available from Level 4 to Level 6 providing technical, competence-based qualifications.
