Fareham College hosted its Student Annual Awards event on Monday 27 June. The event, which has been delivered virtually for the last two years, celebrates the outstanding achievement of students throughout the last academic year.
Hosted at the Bishopsfield Road Campus in theatre 141, the evening saw the presentation of 17 categories from Outstanding Achievement and Academic Excellence to Sports Person of the Year and Young Student of the Year. This year also saw the introduction of a new category, Apprenticeship Employer of the Year, awarded to Hampshire County Council.
Councillor Roz Chadd, Hampshire County Council Deputy Leader, who as Executive Lead Member for Children’s Services also has responsibility for apprenticeships within the County Council, said:
“Both as an employer and as a local authority, Hampshire has benefited greatly from the high-quality training delivered by Fareham College for our employees and the apprentices we support under our levy scheme. Our partnership extends to developing bespoke programmes to meet our needs, enabling the County Council to nurture homegrown talent to continue to deliver excellent essential services to Hampshire.”
Managing Director of Business Partnerships and Commercial, Anoushka Ottley said, “Fareham College works in partnership with many incredible employers and it was tough to pick a winner, however, Hampshire County Council was chosen due to their exceptional dedication and commitment towards apprenticeships. Not only within their workforce but also to the many businesses they support through apprenticeship levy transfers, enabling them to recruit new talent and upskill their existing workforce. We look forward to bringing this award back next year to celebrate more employers.”
Attending students, their guests and VIPs were greeted with a drinks reception and hospitality provided by Avenue 141. Music students Shannon, Brandon, Thomas, Janiec, Kelly, Huw and Rosie performed as The Highlights, with Millie and Jack delivering an acoustic set.
Principal and Chief Executive Andrew Kaye said, “It is always enjoyable to gather as a College and celebrate the hard work and incredible achievement of our students. This past academic year has seen many challenges and there has been a great deal of resilience and determination demonstrated by the whole student body, staff and wider community. I am pleased to host this event in person this year, following two years of virtual celebrations, and look forward to congregating again next year.”
Student of the Year was announced on the night with Niall Dorrington receiving the accolade. In their citation, Niall was praised for their dedication and commitment as an ambassador for the Digital Production Design and Development T Level having taken part in events organised by the Department for Education, social media and filming/promotional activity. Staff from Hampshire Constabulary, where Niall has completed his 45-day industry placement, also praised Naill, with Design Leader Kate Mason adding “Niall is a natural leader and is proactive in all projects. Niall has exemplary presentation skills and showing cases projects explaining the challenges and successful throughout the project with confidence.”
We caught up with Niall at the end of the night, “I am very overwhelmed and grateful for winning the Student of the Year award. It’s been an excellent two years studying at Fareham College, and I have had many exciting opportunities; I have built my confidence and gained friends for life. I have had the chance to speak honestly and proudly about the T Leve course I have studied and been able to educate my friends and family about all of the course’s benefits. I feel very excited about my next steps after College, where I am now progressing onto a four-year Software Engineer Degree at Lancaster University. I know that the College has helped me get to where I am today. The advice I’d give to someone looking to study at Fareham College is; don’t worry about not knowing anyone, as you easily make friends and take the leap of faith with the course you want to study if it is something you are passionate about.”
