Introduction

At Fareham College, we offer GCSE and Functional Skills programmes in English, Maths and Science. These essential qualifications are available for adult learners aged 18+.

Having a strong understanding of English and Maths is often a requirement for many job roles and further/higher education programmes. As a recognised Centre for Excellence in Maths Fareham College provides a supportive environment and can support you to achieve.

GCSEs for School Leavers

If you didn’t manage to achieve a grade 4 (C) in English or Maths at school you will automatically work towards gaining these qualifications as part of your main study programme at College.

Classes will normally take up about 3 hours per subject of your weekly timetable, and you will be taught by supportive and friendly tutors who provide lots of practical help and guidance.

GCSEs for School Leavers

At Fareham College we offer Maths, English and Biology GCSEs through day time and evening programmes. You can expect to be in lessons for around 3 hours per week and should prepare for an additional minimum 3 hours of homework per week.

  • Day time Maths – Tuesday between 10am and 2pm
  • Evening Maths – Tuesday between 6pm and 9pm
  • Day time English – Tuesday between 11am and 3pm
  • Evening English – Tuesday between 6pm and 9pm
  • Biology – Wednesday between 9am and 12 midday.

Due to the nature of the programme and required teaching and independent study, we encourage students to only complete either Maths or English GCSE at one time. If you enrol onto a full time programme at Fareham College and require these courses we will discuss the options available and make exceptions where possible.

As part of the application process you will be required to complete a diagnostic assessment to determine the level at which you need to enter. This will require you to attend Fareham College, Bishopsfield Road campus and you will be given more information at application. Please allow two weeks from completion of your assessment to receipt of results.

Functional Skills

At Fareham College, we can also offer Functional Skills studies for Maths and English. If you are looking to develop your skills prior to a GCSE course or hoping to develop the practical confidence required for a level 3 programme, Functional Skills can be the best route.

Functional Skills can be delivered as a part time programme, running on a Monday daytime or as part of a Traineeship.
