Fareham College Student Finalist to Compete at WorldSkills UK in November Following Outstanding Performance at Guild of Bricklayers Competition.
Jago Gamblin, Level 2 Bricklaying student from Fareham College, competed as part of the Guild of Bricklayers regional competition; Jago is building a solid foundation to further enhance his career as a Bricklayer after winning the Southern section hosted at Eastbourne College.
The tough-fought competition saw Jago emerge the winner, demonstrating his skill, hard work and dedication. Competitors were given a working drawing showing a Brickwork task outlining certain features, dimensions and differing types of finish and style; they then had six hours to complete the task independently. Once the time is up, the Guild of Bricklayers judges mark each wall to the smallest margin and announce the winners at a ceremony and prize giving.
Following on from his success Jago went on to represent the Southern region and Fareham College with an outstanding performance at the National Competition held at South Stafford College. While he did not win, James Tittrangton-Coleman of York College took the trophy, Jago performed admirably and with great skill, and was unlucky not to finish in the top three.
Brickwork lecturer Steve Kirk commented, “As a department, we are exceptionally proud of Jago and his performance at the Southern and National Finals. He performed admirably, and the work produced was to an exceptional standard. I have no doubt he will go on to great things in the future.”
Jago said, “ I was really pleased to make it to the final and thought I did a good job. Unfortunately, I didn’t win on this occasion; however, the experience was great, and it has given me a great deal of confidence, and I am already looking forward to having another go next year.”
Jago and the College received further good news as it was announced he would compete at the WorldSkills UK competition hosted at Edinburgh College on 14-17 November. If successful in Scotland, Jago will have the opportunity to train and compete in international competitions, such as the WorldSkills final in Lyon in 2023.
The Guild of Bricklayers, established in 1932 to promote the trade, ensuring the highest standards of workmanship, runs regional competitions and a national final each year highlighting the skills of young Bricklayers from across the country.
