A traineeship is a tailor-made study programme for young people aged 16-24 who want to work or apply for an apprenticeship, but would like some additional support to build their skills and confidence first.

They usually last for six months and are specifically designed to help you to develop important employability skills that are necessary to find, keep and be successful in a job – and to stand out to potential employers.

Traineeships mix the development of skills and knowledge with a work experience placement to get you ready for an apprenticeship programme or other full time employment.

Our traineeship programmes are designed to fit individual learner needs and will last for a maximum of six months.

Build important skills

Traineeships provide you with important skills to support your journey towards a job including:

  • CV writing and job searching
  • Interview preparation and training
  • Focused work preparation training
  • A high quality work placement – from 6 weeks to 6 months
  • A weekly work-based allowance of £64.50
  • English and Maths support – for those that have not achieved GCSE grade C or equivalent
  • Progression planning for an Apprenticeship or employment

Who are Traineeships for?

If you are looking to continue your education and gain further qualifications through work-based learning (such as an Apprenticeship) rather than a full time course, then a Traineeship can help you get to where you want to be.

Depending upon your particular needs, a range of support and flexible training is provided to help you to progress quickly.

A Traineeship could be a good option if you are:

  • 16-24 years old
  • Not currently in a job and have little work experience, but are focused on gaining work
  • Have qualifications below Level 3
  • Are keen, enthusiastic, reliable, and ready and eager to start your career
  • Need to improve your English and Maths

How is a Traineeship delivered?

The biggest benefit of a Traineeship is that you gain actual work experience within the industry you are interested in working in. We work closely with a number of committed and supportive employers from many different industries in and around Fareham, Gosport, Portsmouth and Southampton who can provide you with valuable experience.

A Traineeship will usually start with a 4 week period at College to get you started, followed by work experience with an employer over a 13 week period. This work placement increases over the duration of the rest of the programme to support you in getting used to the experience of full time employment.

Before you enrol

As soon as you successfully apply for a Traineeship we start planning the work experience you would like to do, and find you a suitable employer to work with. It’s just like applying for a job, and we will forward your CV to our sponsor companies who will then interview you for your work placement.
